germline- a series of germ cells that are descended or developed from earlier cells in the series, regarded as continuing through successive generations of an organism
eg. "Transgenesis refers to the process of introducing exogenous genes into the germ line of an organism."

genome- the complete collection of genes and genetic material present in a cell or entire organism
eg. "There are places in the genome which do not have a known disease-related function."

to thrash out- to discuss fully in order to resolve a problem
eg. "The committee took hours to thrash the whole matter out."

to impose- to force ( for example an unwelcome) on someone
eg. "Power to impose customs and excise duties to be in the Federal government and parliament."

GM crops- plants used in agriculture with DNA modified by using genetic engineering techniques
eg. "Half of the UK population is not well informed about GM crops."

to wield- to have and be able to use
eg. "How long shall they wield unlawful power?"

backlash- a strong negative reaction of a large number of people to a social or political development  
eg. "The backlash against carbohydrates is a result of the low fat craze that started in the 80s."
